East Coast Success at the

Qantas Australian Tourism Awards

The East Coast shone at the 2024 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Adelaide, with four finalists in the Awards, and our very own Emily Elmer achieving national recognition for her outstanding contributions to the tourism industry.

Emily’s business, Younique Stays, took out Gold in the Tourism Retail, Hire & Services category, marking a historic first for the awards.

Reflecting on the achievement, Younique Stays shared:

"We are still in awe of our incredible achievement! Winning GOLD in the ‘Tourism Retail, Hire & Services’ category, especially on the 40th anniversary of these prestigious awards, is both humbling and exciting. This follows an exceptional year, having also won GOLD at the Tasmanian Tourism Awards and Emily receiving the Tasmanian Tourism Minister’s Young Achiever Award."

SUMMER OCCUPANCY STATISTICS

Tasmania’s summer season has delivered outstanding results for the accommodation sector, with the East Coast recording an 83.38% occupancy rate in February—an impressive 3.78% increase from last year. This growth reflects the region’s strong visitor appeal, from pristine beaches and breathtaking national parks to world-class food, wine, and hospitality experiences.

Statewide, February saw one of the highest occupancy rates on record, with an 89.53% average across Tasmania. The summer quarter (December to February) also recorded an impressive 82.97% occupancy rate, proving that the state remains a premier destination during the warmer months.

Steve Old, CEO of the Tasmanian Hospitality Association, praised the achievement:

"These numbers are fantastic and a testament to the hard work of tourism and hospitality operators. The growth on the East Coast shows the strength of our regional offerings, and we have the potential to build on this even further."

While summer success is cause for celebration, industry leaders are now turning their focus to sustaining momentum into the quieter months. With continued investment in shoulder-season events and strategic marketing, the East Coast is well-positioned to keep attracting visitors year-round.

These figures reinforce what we already know—the East Coast of Tasmania is a must-visit destination, no matter the season!

The Tasmanian tourism industry acknowledges the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita / Tasmania. We honour 40,000 years of uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement. As a tourism industry that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully. We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands. We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
